The BlackBerry KEY2 appears to have been officially confirmed, together with a launch event date, as BlackBerry’s official Twitter account posted a promo labelled with “BlackBerry KEY2”, stating that we would see “an icon reborn” at an event on June 7 in New York.

The new BlackBerry flagship previously rocked up in benchmarking database entries.

It originally appeared in a Geekbench test results listed as the QUALCOMM BBF100-1. To put that in some kind of context, the BlackBerry KEYone was the BBB100-X and the BlackBerry Motion was the BBD-100-X.

The handset uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 octa-core processor – the current flagship BlackBerry KEYone uses a Qualcomm MSM8953 Snapdragon 625, so this would be an upgrade.

Of course both those chips are lower-tier than the current Snapdragon 835/845 typically seen in other flagship Android phones, but that’s a deliberate choice on BlackBerry’s part, as the company is more interested in optimising its implementation of near-stock Android around efficient and more battery friendly chips.

The KEY2 also has 6GB of RAM. Earlier reports indicate the handset might feature a 1620×1080 pixel touch display and will almost certainly have a physical QWERTY keyboard.

Chinese certification authority TENAA has listed a handset codenamed “Athena”. The listing includes photos which show a dual-sensor camera on the back, and the handset is given a model number BBF100-4, which is quite close to the first-gen KEYone’s BBB100-X designation.

The included images also line-up mostly with leaked renders from a few months back (which we’d missed – oops), with a few minor tweaks to the design.
