WhatsApp users can disable the default media and document downloads in the app, an excellent way to reduce data usage. Users on capped-data plans can avoid the unwanted consumption by turning off the file auto-download on mobile or Wi-Fi networks. WhatsApp automatically downloads photos, animated GIFs, audio and videos by default, meaning a user can review and disable what is auto-downloaded. The app does not allow automatic downloads of voice messages or voice notes. The feature is easy to manage, with both Android and iOS users able to conveniently adjust auto-download settings for all or individual group chats.

WhatsApp automatically downloads documents and media files (photos, audio, videos, animated GIFs) by default. If you have a capped data plan, disabling auto-download is an excellent way to reduce your data usage.

You can also turn off file auto-download for cellular data and Wi-Fi connections. This tutorial will show you how to stop WhatsApp from auto-saving images to your device’s gallery.

Note: WhatsApp always downloads voice messages (or voice notes), and there’s no way to disable or turn off automatic downloads for voice messages.

Cheers to a Cleaner Gallery

WhatsApp’s auto-download feature can quickly fill your phone’s gallery and storage space with unwanted media or files. Disable auto-download for both Wi-Fi and cellular data if you don’t want WhatsApp downloading files without your approval.

By following the steps outlined above, you can also choose which file types to download manually, allowing you to keep your phone’s gallery clean and organized. It’s important to note that WhatsApp always downloads voice messages automatically, so turning off auto-download won’t affect those files. By taking these steps, you can save data, free up storage space, and have more control over the media downloaded by WhatsApp.
