Even though the Google Drive backup option is the easiest way to backup your WhatsApp messages, people are lazy sometimes and miss it. Some people are not even aware of the backup option while others are concerned about the WhatsApp data consumption or the security. It is not clear whether the messages stored on the Google Drive are also encrypted like the original WhatsApp messages.
The million dollar question! Is it possible to recover the deleted WhatsApp messages without using the Google drive backup option? The answer is “Yes.” You can retrieve deleted WhatsApp messages by using any of the methods given below:
1. Recover Deleted WhatsApp Messages from Local Backup
Do you know? WhatsApp backup a copy of your messages every day at 2 AM. And, these messages will be stored in a file either on the memory card or the internal memory of your smartphone. You can simply recover the deleted WhatsApp messages from this local backup copy.
Follow the below steps to recover the deleted WhatsApp messages. (This method will work only if the Google Drive Backup option is not enabled).
- First, uninstall the WhatsApp messenger from your phone.
- Then, reinstall the app from the Google play store.
- Open the WhatsApp, complete the verification process once again by entering the 6-digit verification code received via SMS or voice call.
- Now, you should see a screen titled “Restore Backup” with the message “Backup found” and two buttons namely “RESTORE” and “SKIP”.
- Just click the “RESTORE” button to start the recovery procedure. Based on the size of the messages, it will take a few seconds or a couple of minutes to restore all your messages.
- Once all the messages are restored, you will see a “NEXT” button. Click that button and follow the on-screen instructions to reload your WhatsApp profile.
2. Restore Deleted WhatsApp Messages using File Manager
Sometimes you may not need to recover all the message for WhatsApp. You may need to restore files from a certain date or time. If you would like to restore the messages other than the most recent ones, then you need to do the recovery manually using a file manager app. For manual recovery, follow the steps below:
- Download and install file manager app (preferably a free version from the Google Play Store).
- Open the file manager app and navigate to the folder /WhatsApp/databases. This folder will be located either on the SD card or the internal memory of your smartphone.
- From the database folder, find out the files with the following name format.
msgstore-YYYY-MM-DD.1.db.crypt12. YYYY-MM-DD indicates the data on which the file was created. Also, you will see a file named msgstore.db.crypt12 which is nothing but the most recent backup file.
- Now, if you need to recover messages on a particular date, you have to rename that file to msgstore.db.crypt12. (WhatsApp will always restore data from the file named msgstore.db.crypt12. You can rename any dated file to this default file name and Whatsapp will restore data to that date). Make sure to backup current msgstore.db.crypt12 file before renaming.
- Now, uninstall the WhatsApp and reinstall from the Google PlayStore.
- After you complete the Whatsapp verification process, click the “RESTORE” button when the screen prompts the same.
Now WhatsApp will restore the data from the file you renamed. You can repeat the process to get back the WhatsApp data from any date by renaming the backup files.
